Playing Up at Sol SC
When it’s considered, how decisions are made, and what families should expect.
What is “playing up”?
Playing up means a player participates in an older age group than their assigned age-group label. Playing up is an exception, not an expectation.
What We Prioritize
- The right environment for development and confidence
- Player safety + readiness (physical and emotional)
- Fairness and consistency across the age group
Our Decision Standard
We approve playing up only when it’s clearly in the player’s best long-term interest (development, confidence, safety) and allowed by league/competition rules.
When We Will Consider Playing Up
Playing up may be considered when a player consistently needs a higher level training/game environment than what’s available in their current group and the older group is a clear fit.
What we evaluate
Technical/tactical readiness (not just “one of the best”)
Speed of play + decision-making
Emotional readiness (confidence, resilience)
Physical/safety considerations
Social fit + overall experience
League/competition rules
When We Typically Will Not Approve It
- To stay with friends
- Because a parent requests it without a clear developmental need
- To guarantee playing time, role, or team placement
- To solve roster numbers
- If it creates safety concerns or hurts confidence

Step-by-Step Process
Our New Player Evaluation (NPE) process is designed to be simple, low-pressure, and focused on placing each player in the right environment, not running mass tryouts.
Request Window
Requests must be submitted through the form (not sideline conversations). Window typically runs around ID Clinics through mid/late April (before May 1).

Training-Up Trial
- In many cases, the first step is training up before any roster move
- Typical trial: 2–4 sessions with the older group (plus a controlled scrimmage if allowed)

Evaluation & Review
- Training observation
- Structured coach input
- Tryout window (including May 1) when required
- Technical staff review to ensure consistency

Decision + Expectations
Families receive a decision summary.
If approved, we will clarify:
- No guarantees on playing time, position, or role
- Final roster eligibility depends on league/competition rules

Early-Season Check-In
We review the placement after 4–6 weeks.
If it’s not the right fit (development, confidence, safety), we work with the family on next best steps.

Safety + Competition Rules
Each league/competition can have different roster rules. Sol SC will always follow competition rules and communicate any limitations clearly.
For younger ages, we are conservative because differences in speed/contact/playing environment can create safety risks.

Perguntas frequentes
Can my child play up with an older age group?
Possibly. Playing up is considered when it clearly benefits a player’s long-term development and when the player has earned the opportunity. It is not automatic and is not based on age alone.
What does my child need to demonstrate to be considered?
To be considered, a player must be a top performer in their current age group and project as a starter or clear impact player on the older team. If a player would not meaningfully contribute at the older level, playing up is not recommended.
Does being skilled automatically mean my child should play up?
Not necessarily. In addition to technical ability, we evaluate physical readiness, tactical understanding, emotional maturity, and the ability to handle increased competition. All areas must align for playing up to be beneficial.
Who makes the decision?
The process starts with a recommendation from your child’s current coach. The coach of the older team must also agree that your child would be an impact player. Final approval is made by the Club Director(s).
Can parents request that their child play up?
Parents are always welcome to ask questions, but parent requests alone do not initiate or guarantee a playing-up opportunity. Decisions are based on evaluations and coach/director recommendations.
Does playing up guarantee more playing time or a starting role?
No. Playing up does not guarantee playing time, a specific position, or permanent placement on the older team. All playing time decisions remain at the coach’s discretion.
Is playing up permanent?
Not always. Playing up may be temporary or ongoing and is reviewed regularly. If the environment is no longer benefiting the player, adjustments may be made.
Can my child play up and still remain with their own age group?
In some cases, yes. This may include training opportunities, guest playing, or dual-roster situations. The structure is determined based on what best supports development.
What if my child is not approved to play up?
How often are playing-up decisions reviewed?
