Beginning in the 2026–27 season, youth soccer across the United States is transitioning from a calendar-year age cutoff (January 1–December 31) to a school-year cutoff (August 1–July 31). The 2025–26 season remains unchanged. All updates apply beginning with 2026–27 team formation.

Under the new school-year age grouping model, players will be organized by academic-year alignment rather than calendar year. This means some players will carry a younger or older age-group label than they currently do, but this does not mean repeating or skipping a year.

Sol SC Play-Up Policy for 2026–27

Parents often ask whether their child can play in an older age group. Sol SC allows formal play-up requests under structured criteria.

About 2026–27 Soccer Age Changes

How do I know what age group my child will be in?

Youth soccer will now use a school-year cutoff (Aug 1–Jul 31). To make this easy for families, Sol SC will provide a simple age-group (chart or tool) showing exactly which team grouping your child falls into for the 2026–27 season.

Is my child repeating a year?

No. Your child is not repeating a year of soccer development.
The age-group labels are simply shifting to a new cutoff date. Players will continue progressing through the development pathway just as they do today.

How are jersey numbers handled?

Returning players will keep their existing jersey numbers whenever possible. If roster changes create duplicate numbers on a team, coaches will work with families to resolve those situations before the season begins.

Can my child request to play down?

Players are generally placed in their assigned age group based on the new guidelines. Generally speaking players are not allowed to play down an age.

Will my child lose their teammates?

In many cases, majority teammates will stay together. Some roster adjustments may happen due to the new grouping structure, but Sol SC will consider continuity, friendships, and team chemistry whenever possible while placing players in the right development environment.

What happens if we register after April 30?

Players who register after April 30 may be placed based on remaining roster availability. Registering by the deadline helps ensure the best possible team placement and allows our staff to build rosters during the transition.

How does this affect competitive league placement?

League placement is determined by a team’s competitive level, not the age group. Sol SC will continue placing teams in leagues that best match their development level and competitive standards.

When will teams for the 2026–27 season be formed?

Team formation and evaluations will take place during the Spring evaluation period for existing players, with teams finalized after open tryouts in early May and during the summer before the start of the next seasonal year. Families will receive communication from the club as timelines approach.
